Follow God's ways
Thoughts from Psalms 1 & 2 the Passion Translation.
How Do You Follow God’s Ways?
Here’s what the psalmist tell us to do:
Have Godly friends. (Don’t hang out with the wicked; Ps. 1:1) In Proverbs it says, “Sweet friendships refresh the soul and awaken our hearts with joy, for good friends are like the anointing oil that yields the fragrant incense of God’s presence.” (Prov. 27:9, TPT) Our friendships should take us to God, not away from Him. Those who follow in God’s ways have friends alongside them following God’s ways as well.
Find your pleasure and passion in Him and His Word. (Ps. 1:2) By remaining true. Remain: to stay, to abide. Last year at the Women of DestinyConference, one of the Journey Room stations talked about abiding in God by His divine energy and influence. We remember that God is our life source, not just our emergency line, but that every day we chose to remain and abide in God. We find our pleasure and passion in Him and remain true to God’s love and His Word. Reading the Bible like you are today is an incredible start to abiding and remaining true.
Become deeply rooted. (Ps. 1:3) In Matthew 13, Jesus told a parable about people who heard the Word of God, but when life got real and hard, their rootswere “insufficient”. So how do you have sufficient roots and get deeply rooted? In Ephesians 3:17, we find the answer, “Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” (NLT) When we abide in God and have an understanding of God’s love, that’s when our roots will grow down and keep us strong!
Walk in unlimited authority (2:9) When Jesus rose from the dead and beat the grave, He gave us the keys with unlimited authority! Do you use that authority to make heaven collide with earth? Or, do you not take God at His Word, allowing life to determine your authority instead of Jesus? See, these are building blocks. Because, when we find our pleasure in God by abiding in Him, understand His love and are deeply rooted, that’s when authority becomes who we are because we know whose we are!
Serve and Worship God. (2:11) I love that those are two different things. Serve and Worship. When Jesus was born the three wise men came with gifts. But first before they gave their gifts, they first worshipped Him. Why? Because God desires our worship apart from our gifts. He desires us to use our gifts to help people see Jesus, but to never take our place of worship to our King. Every day we should be faith with feet (action!) and serve others like Jesus did. But, let us never mistakenly think that doing those things is enough - God still desires our worship.
Hide yourself in God. (2:12) Psalms 91 tells us that those who live (abide) in the shelter of God will find rest in His shadow. Where are you hiding? See, darts will fly toward you. Satan is after you. Jesus told us that “in this life we will have trouble”, so trouble and fiery darts - they’re coming. It’s not the question of “if”but “when”. So the real question is, where are you hiding? Where do you run when life gets rough? Do you run to your friends to gossip and cry? Or, do you run to God, who can hide you in His shadow! Here’s what I know - the more you learn to run to God the easier and more routine it becomes to hide yourself in God.
So how do you follow God’s ways? Find friends that lead you to God, remain and find pleasure and passion in Him, ground yourself in His love, walk in unlimited authority, serve and worship God, and run to God to hide yourself from the troubles of this world. God’s waiting, but it’s up to us to follow in His ways.
God, thank You, for You have planted me in Your design. You’ve planted me inside of Your garden of grace. Your desire is for me to follow inside of Your ways, so today help me and guide me to know what I need to start, stop, and continue to do. My desire is to follow in Your ways. I call Godly friends who are on the same path, who will help me to remain and find pleasure and passion in You. Help me to understand how deep and wide Your love is for me, in order to grow my roots deeper into You. Today help me to walk in the unlimited authority that You have already given me, that today heaven will collide with earth. Lord, today I want to serve You with my gifts, but I also desire to worship You for who You are. God, I want to hide inside of Your shadows. When Satan attacks me, help me to run to You and hide myself in You. Lord, I love You and I thank You for everything You’ve done for me, and I thank You that the best is yet to come! In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
