The power of praise
From Psalms 7 & 8, the Passion Translation
We have all been in situations where it feels like we are being torn to shreds, attacked, and our hearts felt shattered. It can be a family member, a friend, a coworker, or even someone you have barely spoken to. King David shares how deeply hurt and helpless he is feeling. Everywhere he turns he sees disaster ahead of him, for he is facing the accuser. The accuser, because he is the one who has come to steal, kill and destroy. In desperation he pleads for anger to strike them down, and in the next few breaths declares his innocence, proclaiming God as the “soul-searcher” who looks deep into every heart. With this praise to God, hope and faith are near. The God of life and redemption has heard his cry.
There will be moments in our lives when we are feeling slandered by the accuser, and emotions will rise. Anger, despair, hopelessness, inadequacy, feelings of being scorned, unaccepted and afraid…the list goes on and on. It is ok to have emotions. However, it’s how we deal with those emotions that matter. When we face complicated and difficult circumstances, we must search our hearts and know that we can walk through them in a godly way. Do not let someone else’s sin become your own. The gift of the Holy Spirit is in us to help us act. 2 Peter 1:3 (NIV) His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.
Running to the throne and praising Him in His full Glory will turn a scorned heart into a heart of thankfulness. Our Lord fights our battles for us; we are protected, and have shelter in His covering. David looked away from the darkness of the earth and was in awe at the holy reverence that bears Jesus’ Name. Praise has the power to shut Satan’s mouth (Ps. 8:2). The tiniest mutter of praise breaks down walls. Turning off the “woe is me” mentality drops the veil from covering our eyes and helps us see the magnificence that is around us every day. Even the unsaved see the splendor of the Lord, their blinders just haven’t been removed from their eyes to know who owns the title of connecting heaven and earth.
Lord, we pray to always see Your splendor, You are the Lord of creation. The earth breathes your magnificence every day. You are our protector and our redeemer. In moments when we are feeling attacked, slandered, and our hearts are full of despair, may we turn to You and not let the hurt sit in our hearts. We thank You for reminding us that even those who have hurt us are loved by You; may we act in a way that shows your goodness and love, so that the lost may see a glimpse of You in me. Thank You that Your Holy Spirit will guide me each step of the way, that I am never alone. May my soul rest in Your covering, may my praise shut the mouth of the accuser. I thank You for the honor to worship You. I pray to have a hunger to know Your Word, may I continue to seek Your knowledge. May my eyes see Your light before focusing on the darkness. Lord, I love You! I thank You for protecting me, for comforting me, and for redeeming me. Help me share Your love and the gift that is knowing You. In Jesus’ Mighty Name, Amen.
